I'll Still Buy Edited Or Not

Hello my beauties
I love drama. Not personally getting involved in drama, but just the moaning of others. It makes for a bloody good blog post. So when it all kicked off Saturday night, surrounding a brand not declaring that they edit their product advertising, I was rubbing my hands together and planning today's post.
If you're wondering what I'm talking about, basically a video emerged on social media of a high end brand editing the outcome of the product. It had been edited quite poorly so that the finger tips of the model had been blurred out, as well as her imperfections that were supposed to have vanished due to the product itself, not alterations

Despite the title of this post, I agree editing the outcome of a product is wrong. It's misleading and of course false advertising, I mean now I'm expecting to put a product all over my body and become invisible! If we lived in an ideal world then we wouldn't have photoshopping or filters. The problem is we don't live in that world, we live in a world where even fast food gets made to look like a three course meal, never mind cosmetic products.

Instagram has taking over every part of our lives. You want a new relationship? Like their photo. You want to alter your lipstick shade? Use your favourite filter and then hashtag it with #nofilter. So what do we expect, brands are going to edit their products to make them appear perfect, they want them to appear flawless, just as we do our selfies. It's to be expected, and if you're expecting the gods honest truth from anyone in this day and age you'll be hard hit to find out everything you see online is a lie
If I was to be put off a cosmetic product due to false advertising I simply wouldn't wear make-up. Instagram isn't the only way brands lie to us, it's just the latest. You see the mascara adverts on telly, the ones that have been featured for the last ten to fifteen years? Most of the models wear false eyelashes and claim that it's simply the voluminous of the mascara

It's not just make-up products that are professing to be something that they're not either; how do you think hair models have that glossy thick hair? Extension and top hair stylists. I don't see people in uproar when a hair company has a new ad out yet aren't declaring the hair extensions. So why, just because this is a little more gossipy, do you feel the need to slate this brand?

If you love a brand, if their products worked for you and they were your favourite brand yesterday, don't be so two-faced to now start slamming them! The reason I love certain brands is not for the way they advertise but for the way work and compliment me. If they are working well and doing their duties that they claim to then I'm not going to stop purchasing the product.

If you have a snag with the company beforehand, such as you found them to not be up to quality or you didn't stand by some of their policies then go a head and voice your opinions. However, jumping on the bandwagon and shaming a company for something as petty (sorry!) as not declaring edits, personally I don't feel it is worthwhile and isn't a reason for not using the brand again.

Beauty products act differently for everyone, one lipstick shade will appear peach for one person and red for another. Although, like I've stated I don't agree with editing an outcome of a product, this scandal isn't going to influence the result it has on you. It could have been completely untouched but you still wouldn't get that finish so does it matter that much if editing has been going on?

I know this post may get a few negative views, and you don't all have to agree with me! This is just my opinion on the topic.

How do you feel about undisclosed editing?
Would it damage your view of the brand?
Let me know in the comments.

I agree, I mean, I buy mascara all the time but I know for a fact the models in the photos for the product are wearing falsies. I rely on my own judgement- if it works, yay, if it's rubbish, I don't use it. I think people just love jumping on the bandwagon and getting angry about stuff.

Well written post! I agree, as well. I Can understand why advertisements for a product are be altered. Like it only takes common sense to realize our eyelashes won't look as full as Cara Delevigne's if we use Rimmel. They altered her appearance to grab attention. But I feel like it sets an unachievable goal for women which can be detrimental.

You are right that false advertising has been going on for decades. Yes it seems that due to social media it's now under the spotlight more than ever, but you cite some good examples that have been going on for years, like hair models wearing extensions. I don't know if there's an answer to stopping this editing, I suspect there isn't one. However I feel that as a consumer I should be responsible in realising that a beauty product isn't going to make me into Doutzen Kroes.

I was worried no one would agree with me so at least I'm not the only person who thinks like this!

A really interesting post, Charlotte! I totally agree with some of the examples you've picked up on here - a lot of mascara brands use models wearing fake eyelashes in their commercials, and celebs on Instagram who've had verneer teeth fitted advertise teeth whitening products! False advertising is unavoidable it seems! I definitely agree that a lot of people on Twitter and other social media jump on the bandwagon with dragging brands who have been caught out, but really I'm sure even they would buy from those same brands! Fab post!

I really agree with you here! I see false advertising a lot and, although if I'm honest I do do a little eye roll, it also doesn't surprise me in today's society. Hell, my Instagram photos are edited a lot, I'm probably false advertising too, haha! But I completely agree here. It doesn't stop me buying the product at all!

Love this post!! Pretty much EVERYTHING is edited/made to seem better than it is. In the real world, perfection sells, sadly whether we agree with it or not. I think my favourite fairly recently was when Kendal Jenners knee caps were photoshopped out, I mean c'mon, who doesnt have knee caps lol!! Fab post xx

Really interesting post! Everything these days is editied! To an extent I think it's wrong but at the same time I feel that's what makes beauty photography. Gorgeous glossy, perfect photos! And it certainly tempts me to buy!

I think it depends on the kind of editing. Everything is now edited. But like lightening up a picture is not like erasing love handles on a body. So i think it really depends! xx corinne

Great post. I agree it depends on what kind of editing.. if they're altering what the product IS, that may be an issue. However, if does come down to how it works for you!

Always interesting to see another perceptive on this. Personally I'm sometimes surprised by how much backlash brands get for this kind of thing, if people put as much effort into charity work as they do into ranting online the world would be a very different place xx
